Fire and Life Safety Director F-89 Active Shooter Preparedness and Medical Emergencies Course

Fire and Life Safety Director F-89 Active Shooter Preparedness and Medical Emergencies Course

The New York City (NYC) Fire Department (FDNY) amended the existing rule for Fire and Life Safety Director Certificate of Fitness requirements on October 28, 2016.

A recent update to Section 113 of the New York City Fire Code takes effect on December 1, 2016. The amendments to the 2014 fire code as enacted by Local Law 148 affect certificate of fitness holders. These changes are intended to update Local Law 26. All Fire Life Safety Directors and Emergency Action Plan (EAP) Directors must complete an active shooter and medical emergency training course from an accredited school by September 4, 2017 or before their current certificate of fitness expires.

The new law updates Section 113-06c four hours of instruction to cover:

– Active shooter emergencies
– Avoid Barricade Confront response
– Training occupants
– Emergency preparedness
– Case studies
– Medical emergencies and 911

After the four hour course FLS and EAP Directors are required to pass a written exam (1 hour).
