Security Guard Training Courses

The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards, a general introductory course, is the first course that must be completed prior to submitting an application to be registered as a licensed security guard.

Each calendar year following completion of the Sixteen (16) Hour On The Job Training Course, a security guard must take this In-Service course prior to renewing his/her guard license.

New York State Law mandates that security guards complete the Sixteen (16) Hour on the Job Training Course within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard. The course will cover the original topics in greater depth and will also include added blocks of training covering additional material including responding to acts of terrorism and other emergencies, the Incident Management System (ICS) and training specific to the site of employment.

Attendees must have both a NYS Unarmed Guard License and a New York Pistol License prior to taking the 47-Hour Armed Security Guard Course. Completion of this course is a pre-requsit prior to applying for a Special Armed Guard Registration Card.

Armed guards must complete an Annual eight (8) Hour Firearms Training Course which includes three (3) hours of classroom refresher on the Use of Force followed by a written examination, and five (5) hours of weapons qualification which includes a proficiency examination. The guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of his or her armed guard registration.
